We went to the headquarters of Elation Professional‘s Italian distributor, Prase, in Noventa di Piave, to test Elation’s compact but powerful moving head, Proteus Radius. It’s an IP66 beam with an extremely fast Solid State phosphor-converted source, equipped with a CMY mixing system and weighing only 19 kg.
THE PRODUCT
Considering its small size and light weight, Proteus Radius has some interesting features such as CMY mixing, which is not always present in such compact products, and a number of effects such as two gobo wheels, four prisms, and two frosts.
Speaking of the IP66 rating, it should be mentioned that Elation was one of the first companies to invest in the use of its fixtures in outdoor environments, recording a number of successful case histories over the years.
Externally we find a large and intuitive color display that occupies the entire front side of the base. On the opposite side are Power, RJ45 and DMX I/O connectors, all with IP66 specifications. Great attention is paid to aesthetic design, with comfortable handles that make it easy to grip and rotate the fixture.

THE FIELD TEST
We analyzed the various features of the moving head with Michele Allegramente, Product Specialist at Prase. It is one of the first IP66 marine grade certified pure beams with battery back-up. The beam, given by the phosphor-converted laser source, has an amplitude of 0.9°, 1° with frost engaged, and expresses 2700 lumens output.
Infinite Pan and Tilt, combined with the truly remarkable speed and small size of the fixture, result in a truly functional effect. The CMY mixing system features mechanical flags, just to fit into such a compact fixture.
The two gobos wheels, fixed and rotating 12-slot and 24-slot, contain well-designed figures capable of giving rise to truly remarkable mid-air effects, especially when combined with the four prisms, two circular, one linear and one triangular, which can be superimposed and which limit light leakage.
Finally, there are two DMX modes of 26 and 36 channels that differ in the various ends. All in all, not an excessive number of channels considering the amount of features in the moving head.
CONCLUSIONI
With Proteus Radius, Elation has come up with a truly versatile beam moving head, useful in different applications and aligned with current trends on employment of laser sources and, of course, on the level of protection.
A fixture that expresses a really solid beam and at the same time pleasant to use by combining prisms and gobos together. So many possibilities in a compact and lightweight moving head.
