Today we talk about an important new development in Pioneer DJ XPRS2 series, an evolution of the well-known XPRS, with two new satellites and subs ideal for portable use, with high-level acoustic characteristics in a neat and elegant form factor. A product that could be useful to many…
But let’s go in order.
For this particular FocusOn we went to the Italian distributor Frenexport, who gave us the chance to test the two systems inside the company’s demo room in Recanati.
THE PRODUCT
The XPRS2 series inherits the versatility and mobility of the original series with the addition of even better sound performance and audio intelligibility, making it an ideal system for small live events, venues, fixed installations and rentals. The new XPRS2 series features a sleek all-black, protective plywood cabinet, ensuring excellent performance in harsh environments.
The models in the series all feature a handle for safe system portability and handling and rubber feet that create the right separation from the floor and absorb impacts with other surfaces.
The XPRS102 pairs a 10” woofer and 2.5” voice coil with a 1” exit compression driver and 1.75” voice coil. XPRS122 is the largest full-range speaker in Pioneer DJ’s XPRS2 series with a 12″ woofer and 3″ voice coil with a 1″ output compression driver and 1.75″ voice coil.
As for the subs, the XPRS1152S employs a 15” ferrite woofer with a 3” voice coil with long excursion while the larger XPRS1182S relies on an 18” ferrite woofer with a 3” voice coil with long excursion.

FIELD TEST
We are dealing with a range of amplified products (18″ and 15″ reflexes combined with 12″ and 10″ tops), which in fact facilitate and speed up the setup phase as they do not require amplifiers or other additional devices. The DSP settings are well thought out in terms of both presets and the ease of adjusting the various parameters when operating with or without a sub, and each setting (preset) seems to be well thought out and functional for its actual use in the field.
With the various settings it is also possible to manage the frequency cuts, which is always useful to have in case you want to use the tops without a sub or with other different speakers.
The display is large, clearly visible, easy to navigate and allows you to have everything under control and to intervene quickly if necessary.
Speaking of sound, without going too much into the settings, we noticed a very good balance between satellites and subs, demonstrating a work on timbre and equalisation that was well done and probably already effective at an ‘acoustic’ level.
Both systems gave a very good demonstration of flexibility, and the combination with XPRS1152S and XPRS1182S pushes hard enough for live performances, both as monitors and as a small PA, and manages to be discreet and clean but at the same time deep, in speech and in situations where it is used for background music. If we had to give a bit of advice, these new XPRS2s, especially the larger ones, although suitable for many uses, are at their best in contexts where bass depth and general ‘punch’ is required, i.e. DJ sets and the like…
Transport is convenient, with a well thought-out handle system that makes gripping and lifting much easier. The XPRS1152S sub, for example, is easily handled by one person.
CONCLUSIONS
Pioneer DJ is a manufacturer that has been supporting professionals in the world of high fidelity, clubs and DJing for years, and with the XPRS2 series we have been able to discover a range of products that sonically certainly express the company’s DNA, but which, surprisingly, also show particular attention to flexibility.
In conclusion, certainly a product with great potential and at least on a par – in terms of sound quality and general construction – with other important brands that, often, price lists in hand, have higher prices.
As we always say, you don’t buy a sound reinforcement system just for “how it sounds” but by evaluating a whole series of parameters including weight, size, service and, obviously, price.
That’s why the advice is always to go to the distributor and ask for a demo, I mean, that’s what they’re there for…
